How to Model Piping from a Point Cloud in AutoCAD
Modeling as-built piping from a laser scan the old way
Turning a point cloud into an accurate 3D piping model is one of the most time-consuming jobs in scan-to-CAD work. Tracing pipe runs by hand, guessing diameters, and placing every elbow and tee manually eats hours — and a single misaligned fitting can throw off the whole run. If you work with laser scans of industrial plants, basements, or utility rooms, you already know the pain.
This guide shows how to model piping directly from a point cloud inside AutoCAD using the 3D Solution Piping module, so you go from raw scan to editable 3D pipework in a fraction of the time.
Step 1 — Bring your point cloud into AutoCAD
Attach your scan (RCP/RCS from ReCap, or PTS, XYZ, TXT, CSV) to your drawing. Because the Piping module works directly on the point cloud inside AutoCAD, there is no separate viewer or heavy add-on to load — you work in the environment you already know.
Step 2 — Create a pipe from just three points
Instead of drawing centerlines by hand, pick three points on the surface of a pipe in the scan. The module calculates the exact diameter and centerline for you and generates a true 3D pipe. This single feature is where most of the time savings come from: straight runs that used to take minutes are placed in seconds, at the real as-built dimensions.
Step 3 — Add fittings from the library
Real piping is more than straight sections. The built-in fitting library lets you drop in elbows, tees, reducers, and flanges that snap to your pipe runs and keep the network connected. Chain management keeps everything linked, so when one segment moves, the connected fittings follow.
Step 4 — Fine-tune with grip editing
Nothing in a scan is perfectly clean. With grip editing you can nudge, extend, or realign pipes and fittings using familiar AutoCAD grips — no special mode to learn. Adjust to the as-built reality quickly and keep the model tidy.
Step 5 — Link data and export
Each pipe and fitting can carry XData, so diameters, materials, and other attributes travel with the geometry. From there you can export a material list for procurement or hand the model off to the next stage of your project.
Why a lightweight, native approach matters
Many point-cloud plugins install a heavy engine that runs alongside AutoCAD, which slows things down and, all too often, leads to crashes on large scans.
