How to Extract Steel Profiles from a Point Cloud in AutoCAD

Modeling as-built steel from a scan is slow — it doesn’t have to be

Recreating existing steelwork from a laser scan usually means measuring beams by hand, guessing profile types, and drawing each member as a 3D solid one at a time. On a busy structure that is hours of repetitive work, and a wrong profile size throws off everything downstream. If you scan industrial buildings, mezzanines, or plant structures, there is a much faster way.

This guide shows how to recognize and model structural steel directly from a point cloud inside AutoCAD using the 3D Solution Construct module.

Step 1 — Load your scan into AutoCAD

Bring your point cloud into your drawing. Construct works with your AutoCAD point cloud (RCP/RCS) as well as common point files such as PTS, XYZ, TXT, and CSV — so you can start from whatever your scanner or registration software produced.

Step 2 — Recognize a steel profile

Pick points on a steel member in the scan and Construct identifies the profile and generates a true 3D solid. It matches the scanned geometry against a built-in profile library — HEA, HEB, IPE, UNP and more, based on DIN/NEN standards — and selects the correct size for you. Instead of measuring flange widths and web thicknesses by hand, you drop in the right library profile in seconds, at its real as-built position and orientation.

Step 3 — Add concrete beams and columns

Steel is rarely the whole story. Construct also models concrete beams and columns from the point cloud, so your as-built structural model is complete rather than steel-only.

Step 4 — Fine-tune with grip editing

Scans are never perfectly clean. With familiar AutoCAD grips you can extend, trim, or realign members to match the as-built reality — no special mode to learn, just the grips you already use every day.

Step 5 — Keep working in your model

Because every member is a native AutoCAD 3D solid, it behaves like any other object in your drawing: measure it, section it, or hand it off to the next stage of your project without conversion.

Structural scans are large, and heavyweight plugins often bog down or crash on them. Construct stays light by orchestrating AutoCAD’s own commands and adding only the recognition it needs — so it stays fast and stable even on big steel structures.
